Gas-fired equipment is critical to the success of many companies across a wide range of industries and as such, their integrity is of the utmost importance. IRED inspectors are well versed with provincial regulations and CSA B149 codes, which relate to the safety of gas systems for any industrial gas fired installation.

This code provides the minimum requirements for the installation of natural gas and propane appliances and equipment downstream of a natural gas meter or from a propane distributor’s tank.

CSA B149.1-15
Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code

This code applies to the requirements for site specific fuel burning appliances and equipment for which there is no recognized Canadian standard.

CSA B149.3-15
Code for the field approval of fuel-related components on appliances and equipment

Why Should your equipment receive Gas Code Certification?

  • All appliances will be certified or inspected and accepted through a Field Approval
    • Field approval includes technical design review, site inspection, and final approval with documentation
  • Gas Safety Variance - VAR-GAS-01-13 [Rev 1] expired on June 30, 2016. As such, all equipment that fall within the scope of B149.3 will need to follow section 3 of the Gas Code Regulation under the Safety Codes Act. Section 3 states the following:
    • 3(1) No person shall manufacturer, install, sell or offer for sale any equipment related to gas systems for use
in Alberta unless the equipment has been:
      • (a) tested and certified by a certification organization accredited by the Standards Council of Canada, or
      • (b) inspected and accepted by a Certification Body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada, and
the equipment bears evidence of having been accepted in the manner authorized by the certification
        organization, or
      • (c) inspected and accepted by an Inspection Body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada, and
the equipment bears evidence of having been accepted in a manner authorized by the inspection
  • The Safety Codes Act will require all uncertified gas-fired equipment installations to have a site specific field
approval by an Inspection Body or a Certification Body. A permit is required in accordance with the regulations
for all installations, extensions, or alterations of the gas system. These gas installations are to be installed by a
gasfitter, who is the holder of the permit and inspected by a local safety codes officer in the gas discipline.
